Waiakea Hawaiian Volcanic Water was the first American bottled water firm to receive a carbon neutral certification. As things stand currently, Waiakea Water will be the first company to use degradable plastics to package its premium water which is naturally alkaline. It seems that the sky is the limit for the 5-year-old company.
The use of plastics began in the early 20th Century. And for several years, scientists focused on making them stronger and better. However, approaching the end of the previous century, the concept of recycling started gaining traction. With the increase in plastic pollution, some companies have attempted making plastics biodegradable, but apparently, the idea has failed to materialize. Then came Ryan Emmons, the founder of Waiakea Water, with the concept of degradable plastics. Emmons is socially conscious, and he is convinced that his company should be part of the solution to environmental degradation as opposed to being part of the problem.
Waiakea Water uses a revolutionary additive which is the first and only patented additive for nano-degradation of plastics. The additive manufactured and sold by Timeplast is capable of reducing the lifespan of plastics to 15 years, down from 1500 years. Emmons states that Waiakea Water experimented with the Timeplast’s additive for over 1, 200 times and five years to achieve a plastic material with qualities similar to those that customers are used to. Emmons admits that disintegrating a material by over 98 percent and maintaining its integrity was a difficult task but one that Waiakea Water was prepared to face.
About Waiakea Water
Modern American companies are increasingly advocating for environmental, corporate social responsibility, and sustainable production. However, most of them, unlike Waiakea Water, do not practice what they preach.
Waiakea Water’s track record is available for all and sundry to examine. Back in the Mauna Loa, the company is lauded by the locals for planting trees to sustain the environmental significance of the volcano where the water is sourced. Also, the locals benefit from clean water donated by the company. Waiakea Water donates over 600 liters of fresh water for every liter of water sold by the company.
